A Siege of Ogres part 2

SkidAce SkidAce March 27, 2015
Dawn arose, and the troops moved out. As expected, the elven scouts reported a few goblin scouts watching the area. Some of those were slain, but it could not be guaranteed that work of Farhill’s forces being on the move had not gotten back to the ogre commander’s. The only thing to do, now committed, was to proceed to the ford with all haste.

It was a deceptively beautiful day, although the unseen gloom that hangs over the beginning of any conflict moved with the troops. That being said, the morale of the units was as good as could be expected.

Soon, the deep river bank and the area of the ford could be seen through the trees, they had arrived, the sun shone, the birds sang, and there was a pleasant spring breeze flowing from east to west.

Aeron joined the engineers and pointed towards the ford, “To the ford! Bring forth the mines.” (Dash to ford and start laying mines, Aeron will attempt to inspire them and help conceal the mines)

the_app the_app March 28, 2015
Rumil was certainly not used to the role of scout, but he felt at home with the elves and trusted their commander’s suggestion. They were to move into the tree line and hide, keeping the element of surprise and hopefully spotting the enemy before being spotted. Rumil switched into elven, knowing that commands would come quick, with mistakes and misunderstandings equalling death. As they moved to cover, he bestowed the blessings of Corellon on the elves who followed his lord – his acolyte teachings meant to inspire and put at ease the restless scouts, itching for a target.

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 March 28, 2015
Nitram and Serre moved around the area currently planning on fighting solo He suggested that the Fire Brigade begin to create some earthen defenses for themselves at the ford as well as the scouts behind and to the side of the crossing. He made his way to Severn, “Brother Severn, I think it would be a good idea to take the scouts across the ford and hide in the trees there. You’ll be able to harass the enemy as they advance on the ford and then you can fall back across the ford and take up defensive positions behind the fire brigade. Just be sure all of your men know where the mines are being placed so you don’t set one off as you withdraw.”

SkidAce SkidAce March 28, 2015
Sgt Slickster’s infantry began marching toward the ford, accompanied by Frederick’s singing of old battle stories.

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 March 28, 2015
As did Lt. Gentry’s. Lt. Gentry met with Sgt Slickster as they moved to discuss the maneuvering of forces, specifically, which units would provide the front line and which ones would serve as reinforcements. “I think I can put my ten in a line across the ford and your seven in reserve to fill gaps. Or, we could break them down further to create even more of a running of the gauntlet for the goblins, anglings groups of two or three units to funnel them out of the ford. What do you think?” Lt. Gentry wondered why he was asking the Sgt. of his unit.

Aeron and the engineers had moved to the ford and begun the emplacement of the mines. Bloefled spoke to Aeron, spitting tobacco on the ground as he chewed, and explained that it would take at least 30 minutes to set up the mines properly. He listened to Aeron’s thoughts on concealment of the mines, and made some adjustments. Engineers have advantage to hide mines

Moving under the Defender’s instructions, the scouts moved into the treeline and took up positions of cover and concealment.

The infantry under the direction of Frederick and Sgt Slickster, began to move forward to the ford. When they passed a the brown rocky raised area, Slickster commented that the high ground there could give the infantry a tactical advantage, but would mean that they had lost the area of the ford itself were they to pull back that far. He pointed out a similar area on the other side of the ford. “Much farther in than that and we lose archer coverage, and the goblins could run around us to the ford.”

Aeron noted that should the goblins arrive early, the engineers were currently exposed.

SkidAce SkidAce March 28, 2015
Sgt Slickster gently reminded Gentry that they didn’t want to be ON the ford when the goblins set off the MINES. “Thats the point of the trap sir, kill all you can BEFORE engaging. I myself prefer to never actually fight anyone.”

Hey Skid, I might not have been clear, but Gentry’s infantry was moving to the ford with Slikster’s.

SkidAce SkidAce March 29, 2015
I did move them right next to Slickster’s in the latest picture?

SkidAce SkidAce March 30, 2015
(Where will the engineers be staging after emplacement of the mines.)

It appeared to no one’s surprise that the goblin units were indeed early to the skirmish. Potentially, they would have preferred to move in at night, but the unexpected departure of the Farhills forces had forced them to adapt.

(Slickster and Gentry’s Infantry need to designate what config they are in…Aid, Defend, or March)

ProfessorHill ProfessorHill March 30, 2015
The engineers fell back to between the conventional units (U/V 18/19) and tried not to look like the soft pudgy underbelly of the Farhills forces. What are the engineers armed with (besides slide rulers and wickedly heavy textbooks)? Can the elves in the treeline fire over the infantry down at the ford? Can they Aid the infantry?

ProfessorHill ProfessorHill March 30, 2015
We are out of shortbow range and they are in long bow range. Fire on the ballistas until the rest come out of the tees.

SkidAce SkidAce March 30, 2015
(The engineers are armed with Shortsword + 3, hit 4 (1d6 + 1), and Grenades (x 4), + 4 to hit, range 60/90, 2d4 explosive damage. Yes, the scouts can fire their longbows over the infantry. Aid is not available, it is a config for units in regiment stance. And just because the goblins you fought before had ballistas didnt mean those goblin engineers had ballistas. Although they do. Hehe.)

the_app the_app March 30, 2015
I can’t fire on anything from here, assuming longbow is 150ft range and each tile is 20ft. I think I can double range (old rule, not sure if in this version) twice (300, 600), but at range penalties. Still worth firing or let them grow closer?

Rumil whispered along the line for the men he accompanied to be steady. No defense was won by revealing positions before the enemy advanced. The elven scouts were tense, but finely trained and attempted to maintain concealment while the goblin cannon fodder advanced.

SkidAce SkidAce March 30, 2015
(Lonbow range in 5E is 150/600. Meaning anything over 150 is at disadvantage, and max is 600. Your three squads on the right can hit them at disadvantage, but the others are out of range. So it depends on whether you want to pot shot them or mass volley as they get closer. Let me know if you are waiting..so I can move to next init or not.)

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 March 31, 2015
Lt. Gentry orders his men to defend and looking at Sgt Slickster’s troops, he calls to his protégé and recommends the same thing since they aren’t planning on attacking any time soon.

sorry for the delay…I was cleaning out my garage. We’re putting the house on the market on Wednesday.

the_app the_app March 31, 2015
Rumil was growing restless, waiting for the goblins to come into range, but knew better than to fire before the targets could be struck. He was also keenly aware that his brothers would also hold their fire. The elves knew nothing, if not patience.

SkidAce SkidAce March 31, 2015
(There is no hold action in the battlesystem rules. However, all combat is resolved simultaneously within a turn, so it doesn’t matter as much. So when/if the goblins move closer during the movement phase, you can decide whether to attack during the battle action phase. Fairly standard for wargame rules.)

SkidAce SkidAce March 31, 2015
(In other words, initiative is only important for MOVEMENT)

Nitram looks across the river to the hill, trying to determine if there are any ballista up there. Lt. Gentry focuses on goblin units advancing to the ford, confident that their defenses will hold. Judging by their speed, it appeared the goblins wouldn’t reach the ford, much less the Fire Brigade’s defenses for a bit. But, he was concerned about whatever they had up on the bluff.

Skid, how long is each turn? Can we use magic (or any other special abilities) from our PCs – as long as they stay embedded? Specifically, I’m think about casting spike growth (I know its radius is 20’)

SkidAce SkidAce March 31, 2015
(Each turn is one minute. I was going for simplicity on this initial battle. After reading the section on spell casting it says “Solos cast area spells as normal against solos or stands within the area.” So I guess you could)

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 March 31, 2015
I good with keeping it simple. Honestly, I’m not anticipating much trouble here :) But we can just use our PCs to add RP flavor. Next time, the PCs can actually do something instead of just look good.

SkidAce SkidAce April 01, 2015
When Nitram looked up at the forces creeping across the bluff, he recalled an earlier encounter with goblins, on in which the ingenious vermin had a wagon with a mechanical repeating ballista mounted upon it. But that device only had a range of maybe a hundred and a half feet.

Nitram though that these approaching contrivances, being pushed and pulled by goblin “engineers” looked different somehow. Maybe bigger?

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 01, 2015
“The bigger they are, the harder they fall,” thought the ranger. “If only I didn’t have to worry about the rest of the men, I sure would like to take Serre up to that bluff to neutralize whatever those engineers are moving. Maybe next time.”

SkidAce SkidAce April 01, 2015
The goblin forces kept slowly approaching the ford. The engineers on the bluff began setting up the wagons they had been maneuvering across the terrain. The appeared to be some type of catapult, and Sgt Slickster could be heard cursing “Anshar’s black ass, Mangonels. That sucks!”

As tempting as it is to move into the first square of the ford to get a VP, I’ll wait. Nitram (or Gentry if we are designating him the unit commander) will attempt to Prepare the unit for (saving against) incoming attacks. Gentry’s infantry is still defending.

xLucix xLucix April 02, 2015
“Is there any way we can bring down their catapults from here? Frederick asked Sgt Slickster, who was ordering the regiments to continue to defend the engineers.

the_app the_app April 02, 2015
The elves watched with interest as the ranged weapons were staged, noting that tree cover would offer some protection, but movement would be their best defense. Now they just had to wait for the right moment to strike, keeping some of the surprise on their side. The goblins were obviously not the right catalyst to demonstrate the defenders tactics.

SkidAce SkidAce April 02, 2015
(preparing for round 3 movement. I am assuming you all are waiting for the first goblins to go BOOM, before any movement or attacks)

SkidAce SkidAce April 02, 2015
The elven archers felt the warm gaze of Corellon upon them as Rumil extolled them to remain confident and hold their fire. There were plenty of targets available, but why waste arrows when those interesting human incendiary devices had yet to do their foul work?

“The scouts arrows might be able to reach them from here, but thats a fair toss.” Slickster grumbled back to Frederick. “Usually best to kill the artillerymen if you can, softer target.”

The goblin infantry on the right flank continued their advance, brandishing shorts swords and shields, the steady beat of goblin drums sending a menacing beat across the land. There were no archers or witchdocters in view, unusual for a goblin troop, as someone had to keep them focused and in the battle. They made their way past the small hill and almost enterd the ford, when the unit on the left rushed into the fray and tripped the first landmine.

The blast of flame and smoke engulfed the flank of the goblin unit, and completely obliterated over half of the unit, flinging dead goblins and body parts nearly 20 feet into the air.

As the smoke cleared and the remaining goblins picked themselves up off the ground, several loud howls were heard as the goblin cavalry emerged from the brush and dashed across the field towards the ford.

(The goblin unit that went boom was the last init for movement on round 3, and friendlies held position, moving to attack phase for round 3.)

If you are not going to shift right to attrit the catapults…then you may want to fire on the approaching goblins before they are in melee.

ProfessorHill ProfessorHill April 03, 2015
Aeron knocked an arrow on His Oath bow and called forth to Bloefield, “Concentrate fire on the wounded goblins on the left!”

SkidAce SkidAce April 03, 2015
(For clarification, the three squads with skulls on them are wiped out.)

Bloefeld reached up to his head and pulled of his misshapen hat and threw it to the ground. “It cannae be done, they still outta bloody range” He picked up the hat and placed back on his head. “Thay wassa glorious boom though ehh?”

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 03, 2015
Steve, I agree with Leggs (that was easier to type than I thought). You need to get those archers into the fight. I expect Frederick/Slickster will move his unit into the ford to engage. I’m not sure the engineers can reach the wounded goblin unit with grenades (very effectively anyway). But, based on VPs, the infantry will need to move through the ford and hold the far bank once the goblins clear the mines. Gentry most likely will move forward and configure (aid) next round and I would expect Slickster to move forward and attack. I would be nice for the archers to engage the engineers. I don’t really want to see what mangonels do to densely packed infantry.

SkidAce SkidAce April 03, 2015

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 03, 2015
someone’s getting a morale check…I’m talking about the goblins. Don’t get any ideas of wiping out half my stands.

Most of Lt. Gentry’s troops gave a hearty, “Hoo-Yeah!” after the explosion, much to the appreciation of the engineers.

xLucix xLucix April 03, 2015
Sgt. Slickster grinned at the carnage and ordered his regiments into the fray. Frederick began trying to inspire their victory, pumping their heads full of the glories of victory and the absolute triumph of Good over Evil. His voice rang out, full of fire and bloodshed and the absolute fact of their triumphant success.

xLucix xLucix April 03, 2015
Frederick will cast Call Lightning if it looks like it might be particularly necessary. And partially because I think its cool lol

SkidAce SkidAce April 03, 2015
(I have made a mistake, but it will not change anything that HAS occurred. There are no MOVEMENT and then ATTACK phases, years of playing wargames led me to interpret the rules that way, but after a careful re-reading because some things were not adding up…its actually just like a regular battle with PCs and monsters, you move and attack on your init. However, results area all simultaneous. So a goblin could move up next to you, be killed by a land mine, makes its attack, and be removed at the end of the ROUND, same time you do morale etc. So in the morning I will update Frederick/Slickter’s input for movement, make attacks, and then it will be the elven scouts turn. If Slickster’s squads kill and goblin squads, they still get their turn, and then all casualties, friendly or foe are removed. Sorry for the confusion, but after this it should run smoother, and more intuitively (like yall were trying to do anyway…)

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 03, 2015
are you talking about for round 3 or 4?
Lt. Gentry gave a complicated command to also move forward in support of Slickster’s infantry. His stands will occupy S22, S23, S24, T20, T21, T22, T23, T24, U20, and U21.

ProfessorHill ProfessorHill April 03, 2015
Engineers should all be in long range (90) of U14.

SkidAce SkidAce April 03, 2015
(It’s close enough, I’ll let it ride. The leftmost engineer will engage on yall’s init. Since you can’t move diagonal in this system, allowing ranged to count diagonal would be OP, they would have greatly enhanced range, that would put the leftmost engineer at the same range as the closest of Slickter’s infantry, clearly they are farther than that away.

(However, I counted 5 squares last night up and over last night (looking at my notes). And using A squared plus B squared equals C squared, I got seven squares away (140 feet, out of range). But after your note, I re-looked and its 3 over and 4 up, which equals the square root (straight line) so 5 squares. Technically 5 squares is 100 feet but since I goofed I’m allowing it. Besides the engineers could step over one square after Slickster moves. Easy stuff, thanks.

SkidAce SkidAce April 03, 2015
Inspired by the explosive carnage, and Frederick’s rousing battle chants, the lead elements of Slickster’s infantry charged into the fray, shallow water splashing up at their heels as the crossed into the ford.

Two squads moved to engage the remaining goblins, while reinforcements piled up behind them.

(Aid config means half movement, but allows units to give up their attack to give advantage to another in a better position. Also, squads/units must stop when adjacent to an enemy.)

The 15th infantry squad (The Badgers) were supported by the men of the 13th squad as they hit the goblin lines. (Att 8, 21a, damage 5) Over half the goblin squad fell to the ground before the ringing of the explosion had cleared their ears. The men of the 14th squad pressed forward from the side, but were unable to finish off the goblin squad. (Att 14, miss) The rest of the unit pressed in to continue support.

(Note: 13 is NOT adjacent to the enemy. Such are the vagaries of war.)

“And there they are brothers…the additional forces. We move.” With that Rumil motioned for the men to advance out of the forest and aim at the nearest goblins. “Fire to thin their numbers before those foul beasts arrive. It is not ours to win the battle, it is our to keep those in the front line from falling.” He then pulled his intricately crafted elven bow, knowing that where he aimed, these well trained scouts would follow. Notching one of his whistling arrows, he fired as soon as he know he was close enough to strike, continuing the advance after, ready to engage again. The last thing the goblin would hear would be one of those deadly screaming arrows, as it pierced the whelp’s hide.

xLucix xLucix April 03, 2015
Blood sang in Frederick’s veins, and he recalled the stories of bards who took part of the stories they told. Who used their song and chants to deal blows just as vicious and merciless as barbarians or wizards. He even felt as though he had touched powers that he did not have access to before. Perhaps this was nothing more than a placebo effect from the Book of Kells. Perhaps not

SkidAce SkidAce April 04, 2015
Rumil and the scouts unleashed a barrage of arrows at the nearest goblins. They had moved out of the trees just enough to bring the the two nearest squads of goblins into easy slaughter range. Arrows rained down from the sky, and Rumil’s eerie whistling arrows indicated the left flanks target as each scout launched two arrows at goblins.

While the goblins on the far side of the ford were just out of standard range, the elven scouts on the right flank were encouraged by Rumil and their brethren’s success and took the shot. Arrows ranged out even farther and took another deadly toll on the goblin units. (disadvantage for range)

The five mangonels launched their rocky amunition at the largest force they could see, Gentry and Nitram’s infantry. Over half of the shots fell short, splashing into the river, but some of the rocky missiles caught the right flank of the unit. (that plus 2 defense saved some squads)

Aeron simply pointed Blofeld at the ford, and the vulnerable goblins just past the rocky shore. Bloefeld gasped, grabbed a grenado and ran forward with the rest of the engineers, lighting their fuses as they went. Blofeld’s squad finished off the closest wounded goblin squad with a resounding boom that shook the waters of the ford. The other grenados fell dangerously short and singed the mustachios of a few of the engineers.

The goblin unit under arrow and grenado fire saw no choice but to engage as quickly as they could. Bloefeld’s squad was slammed into by a mass of goblins and reeled back from the impact.

The worgs continued their howling advance across the scrubland.

“Keep your men on the move and spread out! Make them take time to reposition their machines!” Rumil then ordered his brothers to continue the advance, but to remain light on their feet.

Slickster ordered three of his squads to help Blofled fight off the goblins that he was engaged with. As the squads moved, they shouted for anyone who could help them to back them up. Preferrably with major artillery

ProfessorHill ProfessorHill April 05, 2015
Not sure how that idiot Bloefield ended up moving into melee…they we supppsed to throw grenades and lure the goblins into the mine. Anyway, they will fight a retreating movement of 1 block (into R18, S18, and S19 and will throw more grenades….at short range)

the_app the_app April 05, 2015
Rumil gave the order to shift left and advance. Once the inbound fast movers were within range, he would again fire his “screaming bee” arrow, the rough translation of the elven name for the marker arrows he used to direct his forces fire.

SkidAce SkidAce April 06, 2015
(“Blofeld” didn’t realize when he moved up to range for the grenades that the goblins could reach him in one move. He likely wont forget that after this. When in contact with enemy, a retreat is the only way to move, and foregoes any attacks. There are a couple of inits before then, the situation may change, but will use what you typed if no further instructions received.)

SkidAce SkidAce April 06, 2015
Slickster’s men moved forward and engaged the wounded goblin squad. Another of Slickster’s squads moved around and over, slamming into the unwounded goblin squad and obliterating its foes. (Att 16, damage 7, Att 18a, 7, damage 4. Still in aid config helped second unit successfully attack)

At Rumil’s command the elven scouts moved forward and shifted left. (the front scouts can reach the infantry with standard range, so I’m making an assumption here) The front line drew its deadly aim upon the goblin squads that were a threat to their allies, while the rear line followed Rumil’s lead and attempted to thin the ranks of the rampaging worg riders. (each scout gets two attacks, too many to type, just showing results)

The elven 1st scouts, the lead for the unit and the most decorated of the squads, once again showed its expertise by firing swiftly and accurately, decimating both the groups menacing Bloefeld’s squad. (Don’t forget, attacks are simultaneous, so these units will get one more attack on their init before being removed at end of round.) The remaining elven squads in the front line cheered good naturally , and direct their fire towards the goblin squads in the rear, bringing down most of their foes in a hail of arrows.

Rumil and the second rank of archers fired at the worgs, the squad’s arrows following in after the whistling guidance of Rumil’s deadly bow. (disadvantage)

The goblin engineers seemed to be hooping and hollaring as they rained rock and stones down upon Gentry and Nitram’s men as they tried to pass the ford. One of the goblin mangonels seemed to snap with a loud sound that could be heard across the battlefield, and bits of wood and goblin parts were seen to fly into the air (fumble).

(Blofeld and Aeron’s init, they still may want to retreat based on the fact that the goblin units get their attack before dying.)

Aeron continued to fire arrows at the approaching goblins saying to Bloefield, “Fall back behind the mines and lure the goblins into them (setup).”

SkidAce SkidAce April 07, 2015
Bloefeld’s engineers managed to retreat prior to the wounded goblins being able to attack. The goblin forces, crazed in their bloodlust, shifted along Slickster’s flank and assaulted the unit. But Slickster’s men, along with Frederick’s encouragement, easily repelled their advance.

The worg riders however, were another matter. Charging swiftly in, they ravaged the infantry before moving rapidly back out of range.

Lt. Gentry continued moving forward in a defensive formation, hoping to anchor the goblin cavalry down so Slickster’s men could hit them. Stands in P24 through U24 will dash up and form a line from O21-O26. The wounded stands at S23 and T23 will move to P22 and P23. The final two stands at V24 and W24 will move to P24 and Q24.

As Aeron and Bloefield fell back with the grenadiers across the south side of the ford, they saw the goblin worg riders sweep in from the left flank slashing at Slickster’s Falconaire infantry as the giant wolves and their maniacal riders rode along the north bank. Aeron called to Bloefield, “Form a line and keep the engineers danger close to the mines. We need to lure the goblins into the low lying ford to bring the mines into play and give the archers maximum time to thin their ranks.” Aeron looked up to the bluff as the catapults rained boulders down on their right flank. Aeron’s thoughts strayed to the Carnivax Staff that he stored in an extra dimensional space. If I could get close enough to reach them with a fireball or two…it should provide enough counter-battery fire to thin the siege weapons assault. Aeron knew crossing the battlefield was tantamount to suicide, but maybe if he floated down the river with the rest of the dead…just maybe.

“A bold move” Gentry stated plainly, looking back and forth between the worg riders and the unused mines. He pursed his lips as he ordered the men forward, forming a line to secure the far bank of the ford.

Slickster ordered his men to fall back. While he was confident that his men could take on the worg riders and be victorious, that would almost certainly leave them vulnerable to the goblin infantry

the_app the_app April 08, 2015
Rumil watched as the fast movers came in and departed – appreciating the cunning attack for one he had practiced all too often with his fellow elven flying defenders. But the one thing these foul creatures failed to realize – elven marksmen could let fly an arrow further than a stupid 4-legged beast could run. With a single hand gesture, he moved his line forward, drew his bow to give max penetration to the filthy hide his arrow was to pierce and let loose his signature “screaming banshee” arrow. The line followed the sound and arrows soon rained down on the curs that had attempted to swipe at the line.

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 08, 2015
Gentry heard Slickster’s command and spat in his general direction, mumbling under his breath, “Don’t fall back. Form a line to finish them off!”

Slickster and Frederick’s squads moved cautiously backwards, setting up a defensive line that blocked access to the engineers and the scouts, which had been moving up at the same time. Arrows flew over the infantry’s heads as they got into position.

Knowing the danger the worg cavalry posed to the exposed infantry, the scouts followed Rumil’s lead and moved in closely behind the infantry and the engineers, putting the worgs and their maniacal riders just within range of their deadliest massed fire. (summary, 2 arrows per unit, 16 attacks, 9 hits)

As the worgs continued their rampage, the arrows began to fell them one by one. (remember, the worgs still get their turn) Again, the 1st Scouts showed their lineage and training, with critically devastating accuracy and damage. The 2nd Scouts, naturally competitive, were almost as deadly (2 high damage hits)

The goblin infantry that had been approaching the ford began to pull back at the sight of the massed troops and depart the field of battle. The goblin engineers hastily fired their mangonels at Gentry and Nitram’s infantry a final time, then could be seen to begin sabotaging their siege engines and preparing for departure. The squad on the side nearest the siege engines took the brunt of the attack, barely managing to survive.

Bloefield and Aeron held until the worgs and their riders where cut down by the elven arrows (hold action and shift initiative to first in the next round). Then, in an attempt to draw the goblins back into the fight, dashed forward across the ford as far as possible.

SkidAce SkidAce April 08, 2015
Sadly, there is no hold action in the battlesystem rules. In fact, there are not any in the main 5e ruleset either, you can “ready an action” in order to react to a trigger, but there are no provisions for changing the init mid battle. However, they are marchin away, and if you dashed (12 squares, assuming they didn’t dash) you could eventually catch them. So if the other folks have no problem with it, you can dash the engineers over there and we can see what happens.

SkidAce SkidAce April 08, 2015
(I believe you are trying to avoid the worgs attacks obviously, so I’m saying we CAN wait and have you dash first, if the others want to/or were going to wait anyway.)

Round 1, Victory Points: Farhills 8, Goblins 1

The combat seemed to be over. The worgs had fallen as they used their speed to try and retreat from the fatal barrage of arrows. A momentary silence fell over the battlefield, disrupted only by the faint and subtle gurgling of the water flowing across the rocks of the ford.

And then the silence was broken by a sudden yell from Blofeld, “CHAAARGE!” screeched the seemingly madman, his misshapen hat falling off his head and landing in the mud of the ford as he scrambled across.

Most of the engineers looked at him like he was crazy, but then they all started grinning, hefted their remaining grenados, and with an echoing yell, followed him across the battlefield.

Gentry’s squads moved forward to support the genius/reckless engineers in their bold assault. Moving defensively with a wary eye towards the “sabotaged” mangonels, Nitram and Gentry directed the troops over the slight hill and down towards the rear of Blofeld’s formation, which had almost got up with the goblin masses.

The goblins, resigned to their fate, or buoyed by the entreaties of Anshar or one of their devilish patrons (or rolled a 20 on morale), perhaps Aaman, Nergal, or Astorath, turned with a frenzy to take as many of the cursed engineers with them as they could.

(good thing basic goblins don’t use the Aid formation without a leader attached, they do however, engulf.)

The engineer’s left flanks was bloodied by the unexpected assault from the goblins, but much of the rest of the line managed to repel the attack.

Rumil was interrupted by his study of the battlefield, and the unexpected charge of the engineers by one of the elves from the 1st scouts. The elf directed Rumil’s attention to a small grassy knoll way of to the side and out of the battle. There, a gray hooded figure was seen sitting on a black horse, apparently observing the battle.

the_app the_app April 11, 2015
Rumil stood shocked at the brash action of part of the line. He knew that there were those that were overcome by bloodlust once a battle was started or a friend was downed – but never understood how the lust could overcome the senses so easily.

His fellow elves looked to him for guidance on advancing. He could give none – not while the line was still holding position. His was not to run into battle, sword swinging – his was to defend those that did. He and his elves would not join those that charged foolishly forward – for good or bad.

When one of his brothers, Ehlark, subtly called his attention to a strange figure in the distance, Rumil again held fast. Who was this and why come to this place of death? Were they neutral or allied with the enemy? Perhaps Nitram would know – for he appeared to know much of this world outside of the forest. Rumil grabbed the closest scout, Bellas, and sent him forward to Nitram with the message of the strange figure. The battle was far from over and Rumil’s quiver was far from empty…

…hopefully this new addition to the field of battle would not feel the sting of Rumil’s mighty bow.

SkidAce SkidAce April 11, 2015
Grey_Rider.jpgThe hooded figure seemed to sense that it was being observed, and slowly, moving only its head, it turned to look at the elven scouts, and seemingly directly at Rumil.

Rumil felt the chill that came with being observed – the sixth sense that let you know danger was near, that the shadows held more than darkness. His men could sense it too.

Knowing that nervous men were less effective in battle, he needed to motivate his line, to bring them the assurances of a pending success. This was not the time for speeches, but one of divine strength.

Rumil removed his belt, transforming it into Corellon’s symbol amongst the elves – a long sword. Lifting it straight to the heavens, he called on his blood to augment his prayers, adding an eerie dancing light to float along the length of the blade and a small wind storm to blow his silvery hair about (thaumaturgy x2 for supernatural effects). He rose his voice in a crescendo as he called on his god to lend strength to his trusted archers and precision to their shots. This newcomer would not sap their fortitude. He was no cleric, but he was a defender and knew what put fire in warriors’ hearts…

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 12, 2015
A little frustrated at the interruption by Bellas when Nitram was about to engage the goblins, the ranger still took the time to look toward the grey rider. It took a moment, but then a distant memory surfaced. “Could it be?” he thought. He focused on his brief conversation with Blend when they first met the Grey Rider mercenary company. He turned back to the elven scout, “It’s possible that he is the Grey Rider. Legend has it that his appearance corresponds to destruction and chaos. Which would make sense if this is just the advance of the ogres. Or…it could just be some random person on a horse. But, have brother Rumil keep an eye on him.” Nitram directed his attention to the goblin unit in front of the Fire Brigade and readied himself to charge.

Wow. I intended to just have the engineers throw grenades at the goblins as they fled…oh well.

SkidAce SkidAce April 12, 2015
Based on what I read I moved them within range. But not next to. Since that was a dash, you couldnt attack that round. Then on their turn they rolled a 20 for morale and turned back to attack. I will update grenade throwing tonight when I get home if no other input.

Blofeld lit a grenado in either hand with the end of a cigar in his mouth, and threw them both into the mass of goblins in front of him. The engineers on either side also let lose their grenados, with many a cheer and maniacal laughter. Slickster’s men continued to hold the fort, while Frederick and Slickster kept an eye on the tide of battle, just in case the suicidal goblins got lucky.

SkidAce SkidAce April 14, 2015
The eventual outcome of the battle was clear to all…including the blood crazed goblins. The engineers tossed more grenados, and Gentry’s men moved in for the clean up work, dispatching the remaining goblins with relative ease.

Soon the battlefield was quiet again. Slickster remarked to Frederick, “Those were some of the scrawniest goblins and worg riders I’ve ever fought, no disrespect to the dead. They must have sent their weakest units here to hold the ford, not expecting we would be so capable. Hmmpth”

Blofeld started yewlling at some of the individual engineers, who appeared to be attempting to dismantle the two unused land mines and putting little bits of explosives in their pockets when they thought no one was looking. “Arrgggh! Those be unit resources you guffins…” He had somehow reacquired his hat but promptly threw it on the ground as he yelled back at the ford.

On the near side of the ford, Rumil noticed that the “Grey Rider” was no longer in sight, having disappeared at some point during the final stages of the battle.

You should booby trap the ford then set up a camouflaged LP/OP with two men and two fast horses. Then send out scouts and skirmishers to range across the river (elves would be a good choice) to locate the main host but not engage. Nitram should do them same with Serre. Airpower is key as always. Recon and intel win battles.

SkidAce SkidAce April 15, 2015
The area around the vicinity of the ford was scouted and deemed secure. With the ford held, any further ogre activity would have to aproach Farhills from the southeast instead of the northeast (a day closer route).

This was assuming of course that the ogre commander didn’t decide to retake the ford. But that had been the point of “The Battle of the Clear Creek Ford”. To insure that the ogres would use the other approach, longer and more roundabout to assail Farhills.

The units had finished all their after combat actions, and had buried the 40 fallen infantry on the slight hill on the southside of the ford, overlooking the battle area, their weapons in hand, and shields on their chest for the infantry.

The rest of the units formed up, and looked at the leaders of Fort Farhills expectantly.

mmartin_10 mmartin_10 April 16, 2015
“Brother Darkstrider, I suggest some of the scouts move across and try to find and assess the ogre main body without engaging. We can leave some here to keep an eye on the ford, but the rest should man the walls back at Farhills.” The ranger checked his gear on Serre’s saddle before mounting the griffon. “I’ll see what I can find from the air. Lt. Gentry, take your men back to the fort and make sure everyone is prepared to repel the ogre assault.” Once the group started to disperse, Nitram nudged the griffon into the air, climbing above bowshot before heading the way the goblins came.

28 March (Spring 509 PE (Year of the Ravens)

Several teams of scouts moved out to determine the location of the main ogre forces, while the rest of the units moved back to Farhills. Leaving the ford unoccupied was potentially risky, but it was not far from Farhills, and presumably the scouts could warn of any ogre advance in that direction. It was definitely key terrain.
