Terror Before the Storm Part 2

17 Jannissary (Winter) 509 PE (Year of the Ravens)
1245pm, Earthday
That morning the herald had tracked down the members of the group that were attending the war council and corralled them to the palace in order to get them prepared. There were garments to be fitted and introduction to be made. The king of Falconaire was rather informal, but the leaders of his court expected a certain level of formality.
The herald gave Nitram a list of the people that would be in the actual war council, and told Nitram where the group would be sitting. It appeared to Nitram that there would be a large center table, with the king at the head, and Lord duBlade to his left. Other courtiers and advisers would also be at the main table. Behind duBlade was another table, and so on around the room, with the exception of the 5 to 7 oclock position, which is where the entrance way was. The king sat at the 12 oclock postion naturally.
The other folks at the main table with names that Nitram and the group recognized were;
Matron Mother Talorean, head of the Old Faith, who would sit at the 9 oclock position, Preceptor Raylios of the Pantheon, 8 oclock, Calderon Frezerick, merchant lord, 3 oclock, Lord Alfred Tennyson, 2 oclock nest to duBlade. Sitting next to Calderon, with a slightly disdainful look to her face was Lady Distraught, of Rashemon’s Library.
There were several minor merchant lords sitting next to the party on the right side of the room according to the chart that the group failed to recognize.
After the herald described the seating arrangements, she briefed Nitram and the group that she would come for them in about 15 minutes, and was there any final preparations they needed to make?
(Since I don’t want to railroad anyone, if you attended this council as “Lord” Nitram’s advisers and support, feel free to write yourself in at this point.

Frederick looked out of place, and felt it distinctly. If he were a Master, such as the Senior Orator, then it would have been natural for him to move among those with power, or the illusion thereof. However, gifted though he was, Frederick’s company up to this point had been mostly dead for centuries, or the couple of years that he’d spent with Kells before joining the Library.
However, he directed a quiet smile at Lady Distraught, as he had been in Rashemon’s Library, and found it a quite decent one.

The herald returned and took the group into the council chamber. There were no formal introductions going on, several people were standing around and most people were quietly discussing things of import.
The herald paused at the doorway to give the group the chance to bow towards the king, who nodded back politely and continued talking to duBlade. The herald led the group to their seats.
Upon reaching their spots, Nitram was slightly surprised to see Caldwell Frezerick sitting next to where the group would sit, directly behind his uncle, Calderon. Caldwell grinned slightly and then coughed and nodded formally to Nitram, standing so that the group could edge by.
After Nitram and the group were seated, the king welcomed everyone to the council. “It has been many years since we needed a war council, but the times have changed and the seasons have passed and here we are.” He gestured towards a thin elderly man with a bald head and a long thin white beard. “Sage Anthonius, would you speak to the maintenance and deployment of troops?”
Sage Anthonius stood and unfurled a large map of the area. He pointed out the current disposition of troops in the kingdom.
Unit Location
Infantry (1) Aerie Province
Archers (1) Aerie Province
Cavalry, Merc(1) Aerie Province
Cavalry (1) Gloaming Hills
Infantry, Merc (1) Farhills
He explained that up until this point, it had been easy enough for duBlade’s cavalry to secure the Gloaming Hills, allowing the kingdom to dispatch the “Fire Brigade” to the newly established outpost at Farhills. Sage Anthonius looked over at Lord duBlade and remarked “After the attack at Tennyson’s Tower, both Lord duBlade and I agree that this is no longer a prudent idea. If Farhills can take over the support of the Fire Brigade, this would allow the kingdom to use those maintenance funds to hire/recruit another of the mercenary companies to assist with the protection of the Gloaming Hills. In light of the projected funds from the new trade route to Capone and the Goshen Hills, kindly scouted by duBlade’s lieutenant we also feel it would be prudent to raise another unit of infantry here in Aerie province. All of this depends on the security of the trade route and Farhills supporting the Fire Brigade.”
Nitram realized that everyone in the room was looking at him expectantly.
SkidAce SkidAce June 26, 2014
Fredrick, glancing over at Lady Distraught again while listening to Sage Anthonius drone on and on…caught her looking at him. With an odd look…like stab him with a knife or poison him. Of course Frederick could have been mistaken…hard to tell.
mmartin_10 mmartin_10 June 26, 2014
Nitram bowed his head to the king and spoke to him, “I thank you for this honor, my lord. At this time, Farhills is both willing and able to take over the support of the Fire Brigade. They have performed exceptionally.” “I wonder what the process is to recruit mercenary units in Falconaire. I shall have to ask Lord duBlade or Sage Anthonius after we are finished here.” Nitram looked in the direction of Anthonius and the king’s table, “Might I also suggest that a cavalry unit is moved to Farhills. I believe we can support that as well, although we are unable to recruit our own. It would provide exceptional capability across the plains south and east of the Hills, preventing the enemy from moving around our flank. You might be able to offset that repositioning with an additional new unit?” He waited calmly for a reply, as if this was the most normal suggestion.
mmartin_10 mmartin_10 June 26, 2014
too bad Aeron isn’t here to let Frederick know that is Lady Distraught’s way of smiling.
SkidAce SkidAce June 27, 2014
Perhaps Frederick will discover that on his own…or shall we hope not? Hehe.
King Kashue replied directly to Nitram. “Considering the movements of the ogres that our scouts have reported, which is part of the next briefing, we do not think that would be strategically sound at this time, although tactically, considering your local area, it shows a decent grasp of warfare.” The king nodded at Anthonius to continue.
The sage continued his briefing on the troop dispositions, after nodding at Nitram and writing a note into his ledger. He was explaining the intent to raise a unit of archers for the Gloaming Hills, assigned to duBlade, and a unit of mercenary infantry, for the Aerie province when the king interrupted. “Anthonius, consider adding the infantry to duBlade’s command along with the archers. That will give us flexibility in both provinces, and could allow duBlade to reinforce Farhills, should it be needed.” duBlade nodded his assent, and Anthonius made another note in his ledger. Anthonius completed his briefing with the statement that both “new” units should be ready by the spring season.

Lord duBlade stood up at a gesture from the king, and began his briefing on the movements and activities of the ogre armies.
It seemed that most of the bulk of movement had occurred with the primarily goblin units that the ogres used to scout and test defenses. duBlade gave an overview, stating that goblin units had been noted staging from all along the border between Highkeep province and Aerie province, southward past Tennyson’s Tower and stopping just short of Farhills.
Lord Tennyson stood and gave an account of the goblin assault on Tennyson’s Tower, crediting the morale of the troops that served him and Lord DuBlade, and the always exemplary assistance of Rashemon’s Library and the Magi, bowing towards Lady Distraught as he did.
duBlade stated that all the indications led them to believe that the ogres, well at least the goblins, would be capable of starting an offensive in the spring. But the odd thing was that the normal ogre units that you would expect to see were not in evidence anywhere. Rumors placed them maneuvering on the edge of the Skularian Wilderness, near both the Soulvon and Silver Hills provinces of Xar-Taken.
Other rumors implied that somebody was shipping supplies and weapons to the ogres both overland and via the river, to the rough forest and hills past the the Griffon towers, where goblins would pick them up and transfer them to the ogre supply camps. So far, scouts have seen no evidence of the factuality of this rumor.
Come spring, or just prior, both of these rumors will need to be checked into.
Lord duBlade sat down.
The king opened the war council to general discussion. Calderon Frezerick stated that he and his brethren merchants would investigate via their shipping and caravan contacts to see if they could substantiate the illegal weapons transfers. Calderon also noted that other independent merchants were buying up a lot of the stockpiles of grain throughout the area, predominately Falconaire and Highkeep, but also Toreador. As long as the crops were good this coming season, Calderon did not see that as a problem.
Other little discussion groups were formed, logistical agreements were made, were to stage the troops, who would make the bows and arrows for them, equip them, train them etc etc.
Once everything was worked out, everyone sat down and the king called for any last words.
Caldwell Frezerick stood up quickly and excitedly told the king “Sire, you can count on the trade route via Beltan..Beltandeux..to prosper and grow quickly under the leadership of House Frezerick! Once we have the stables completed and the new admin building we can quickly become a thriving center of commerce!”
The king nodded and asked if there was anyone else…

Frederick had nothing to contribute, instead opting for tinkering on his land-shark tale in his mind. Surely this would end at some point, though the assault on Tennyson’s Tower sounded like something that would have made for a worthy tale. He hoped that there had been a bard with them, or that he would be able to speak to the lords about the battle, though soldiers did traditionally make for poor storytellers. Rarely did they capture the scope of such things, often being concerned with not being eviscerated.
xLucix xLucix June 27, 2014
After the meeting, Frederick approached Lord Tennyson and introduced himself.
*{color:green}"Lord Tennyson, my name is Frederick Lorespeaker, and I am a Bard of the Varencic Scholars. I was wondering if there had been a bard with you at the Tower’s battle, or if you could relate the events that took place to me. It sounds like a battle worthy of tale and song, and I would be quite willing to spin it for you and yours if you so desire." He looked to Lady Distraught and, smiling, said, “And, of course, I would be delighted to include the mages’ roles in the battle as well.”
mmartin_10 mmartin_10 June 27, 2014
During the discussion groups, Nitram asked Blend to look into the rumor of shipping supplies to the ogres, confident that Blend’s contacts would be more likely to discover something than House Frezerick. He also spent some time with Anthonius trying to work out the details of raising, or hiring, a mercenary unit for future possibilities. “We should be able to recruit one in the spring, once we have the trade route with Aelvinwode,” he thought to himself.
As Caldwell Frezerick gave his short speech, Nitram nodded in thanks to his use of the village’s formal name.
After the king opened the floor, Nitram stood and, full of determination, asked, “If it pleases your majesty, I request the honor of leading your troops to seek out the ogres at the edge of Xar-Taken and destroy them.” Unsure if he needed to say more, and worried that he might, he then sat down almost as calmly as he rose.

Blend made sure during the discussion groups that he moved discreetly over to the merchants and tradesmen discussing logistical issues. He steered the conversation to the fact that Harbor Freight appeared to be primarily responsible for the speculation in grain markets, and that there were indicators that they intended to cause an artificial shortage some time soon, either to maximize profits, or hamper the war effort perhaps. Calderon was most interested in this information, and again speculated that while prices would rise, it would not be catastrophic as long as the growing season went fine. Blend also made sure that the merchants knew to be on the look out for the mysterious “Lord Ashmourne” and his henchman “Nazroth”, as they seemed to be doubling as agent provocateurs.

Lord Tennyson was more than willing to regale Frederick with the tales of the battle. Sadly they had not had a bard available at the time, and Alfred’s description was as dry as Frederick had assumed it would be. The part about the goblin commander Kataracht the Spiteful had a nice ring to it however.
(See Realm Management forum…posts Oct 23rd to Nov 4th)
Lady Distraught waited until Lord Tennyson had finished, and then stated expressionlessly “By mages I assume you meant Magi, and there was only one. Ensure you chronicle it properly, and also do something about about the way your lips keep twitching…its unseemly.” She then strode elegantly back towards her seat.

Nitram’s request/proclamation was taken in good faith by the king and duBlade. A few of the other councilors looked somewhat dubious, but that could have been in reaction to the thought of actually taking the war to the ogres.
The king replied to Nitram, Currently we have not reached the point of committing forces in reaction to rumors that could be designed to pull us out of position, however, come the spring or perhaps sooner, there definitely will be an opportunity to investigate or even harry/slay some of the ogre forces we believe to be in and around the Silver Hills. The ambassador from Xar-Taken, Sage Saesarius, assures us that they welcome any scouting assistance and support the lower kingdoms can provide."
Sage Saesarius, a short man with large muscles and a dark goatee, nodded seriously to the king’s words. A large pendant with the symbol of Mithral hung around his neck.
Sage Anthonius walked around after the meeting ensuring all the participants knew their duties and responsibilities. In the days following the meeting, several smaller meetings were held and logistics were worked out.

Aeron arrived in Aerie City with the completed oathbows, and was brought up to speed on the particulars of the war council. As a representative of Farhills and the Queen of Aelvinwode, Lord duBlade ensured that Aeron was formally introduced to the king.
The next several weeks were spend on various duties and individual pursuits by the members of the group. The weather remained cold, but mostly clear.
mmartin_10 mmartin_10 June 29, 2014
Nitram made sure to talk to Sage Saesarius about specific locations of ogre sightings, any native support from Xar-Taken, as well as anything else that a small scouting party might fight important regarding the Silver Hills before traveling.
Once everyone had made it to Aerie City, Nitram asked if anyone wanted to join him in scouting out these ogre camps in the Silver Hills of Xar-Taken.
SkidAce SkidAce June 30, 2014
Nitram received a map from Sage Saesarius, sketching out what little they knew of the ogre encroachment.
Frederick and Nitram used the magic of the pipes to provide Farhills with a support network of minor trails and roads required to become a prosperous province.
Those of the group not familiar with Aerie City used some of the time they spent preparing for spring learning the layout and makeup of the city. (map forthcoming)
The weeks and the months passed. Nitram, Blend, and Aeron successfully negotiated a trade route with Aelvinwode, effectively bringing in valuable trade starting the next season. (Which guild?)
Blend spent a lot of time down at the docks, and due to the agreement with Clotveil, no one seemed to have disturbed the party’s ship, although it had become quite the subject of rumor and speculation. Blend learned the basics of the sailing profession, important info that would assist with the manning and managing of the crew, once the ship was put into use.
Other individual tasks were accomplished, and somewhat swiftly it seemed that warmer weather and spring was on the horizon. Just before the start of the next season, the group re-gathered at the Bronze Wyvern to discuss their plans. The king and Lord duBlade had not provided any new information on the ogres or the illegal trade for a coupe of weeks, but the group knew that it was soon time to make a decision on their next course of action.

as I’ve said in the past: I’m a little slow. this is probably the plan that some of you are envisioning or working toward, but I think we should “sail” our airship down the river to Xar-Taken…assuming that is where everyone agrees to go next (in the spring)
